RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 and malaria share some similar symptoms such as fever, difficulty in breathing, fatigue, and headaches of acute onset. With overlapping symptoms and travel history significant for COVID-19 and malaria, healthcare systems and professionals will face a great challenge in the case of COVID-19 and malaria co-infection. METHODS: Here we presented a patient with COVID-19 infection and refractory anemia of unknown reason. A diagnostic test for malaria was later performed. RESULTS: The patient was ultimately diagnosed with COVID-19 and plasmodium falciparum malaria co-infection. He recovered gradually after receiving anti-malaria treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The present case highlights the danger of focusing only on a diagnosis of COVID-19, reminding clinicians to be vigilant about the possibility of co-infections.

Background: The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) global pandemic has greatly changed the mode of hospital admissions. This study summarized and analyzed the incidence of severe diarrhea and anastomotic leakage during different periods for colorectal cancer surgery. Methods: From January 2017 to September 2020, 2,619 colorectal operations were performed in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. In contrast with previous years, enhanced hand hygiene training, more frequent ventilation of the wards, and separate bed treatments for patients were implemented in 2020. Data on incidence of severe diarrhea and anastomotic leakage were retrieved and collected. Results: The number of cases of severe diarrhea after colorectal surgery was 32 (4.60%), 24 (3.33%), 32 (3.83%), and 11 (2.99%) in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively, while the incidence of anastomotic leakage was 3.30% (23/696), 3.75% (27/720), 2.87% (24/835), and 2.17% (8/368), respectively. There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative severe diarrhea or anastomotic leakage across the various years. Conclusions: The number of colorectal surgeries in 2020 was significantly decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the different years, no difference was observed regarding the incidence of postoperative flora disorder or anastomosis leakage. Enhanced hygiene measures during the COVID-19 epidemic partially contributed to the decrease of severe diarrhea and anastomotic leakage.

Persistent infection and prolonged shedding of human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) in children have been reported, and the role of HBoV1 as a sole causative pathogen in acute respiratory infection (ARI) is yet to be established. While the reported prevalence of HBoV infection varies due to different detection methods and sampling criteria, determining the viral and bacterial etiology of HBoV infection using multiplex real-time PCR is yet to be reported. Herein, we aimed to further explore the pathogenicity of HBoV in patients with ARI by screening the viral and bacterial infections in children with ARI in Qingdao and comparing the epidemiological, clinical characteristics, and etiological results. Human bocavirus was identified in 28.1% of the samples, and further sequencing analysis of the detected HBoV confirmed 96.4% as HBoV1. The rate of HBoV as a single viral infection was 75%, and the rate of coinfection with bacteria was 66.1%, suggesting the need for continued monitoring of HBoV in children with ARIs. Clinical characterization suggested that HBoV infection may affect the function of organs, such as the liver, kidney, and heart, and the blood acid-base balance. Additionally, it is essential to promote awareness about the importance of disinfection and sterilization of the hospital environment and standardizing operations. The interactions between HBoV and other pathogens remain to be investigated in further detail in the future.
